Australia has many helplines. The helplines we share below focus on counselling, legal help and recovery from violence and abuse. National

1800 RESPECT is the national domestic, family and sexual violence counselling, information and support service. Call 1800 737 732 or reach out via the online chat on this website.

13 YARN is the first national crisis support line for mob who are feeling overwhelmed or having difficulty coping. We offer a confidential one-on-one yarning opportunity with a Lifeline-trained Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Crisis Supporter who can provide crisis support 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Call on 13 92 76.

Translating and Interpreting Service – Translation services. Call 131 450. 24 hours a day/7 days per week.

National Relay Service – Phone services for hearing- or speech-impaired individuals. Call 1800 555 677.

Australian Breastfeeding Association – Free breastfeeding support and education. Call 1800 mum 2 mum (1800 686 268). 24 hours a day/7 days per week.

Beyond Blue – Provides information and support to help everyone in Australia achieve their best possible mental health, whatever their age and wherever they live. Call 1300 224 636.

Black Dog Institute – Information on symptoms, treatment and prevention of depression and bipolar disorder.

Blue Knot Foundation – Support for adult survivors of childhood abuse and complex trauma and abuse, available 9 am – 5 pm. For the Helpline and Redress Support Service, call 1300 657 380. For the National Counselling and Referral Disability Service, call 1800 421 468.

Butterfly Foundation’s National Helpline is a free, confidential service that provides information, counselling and treatment referral for people with eating disorders, and body image and related issues. Call 1800 33 4673, 8am-midnight AEST / 7 days a week, chat online or email.

Carers Australia – Short-term counselling and emotional and psychological support services for carers and their families in each state and territory. Call 1800 242 636.

Crisis Care – Crisis Care provides an after-hours response to immediate child abuse and neglect matters, and crisis situations relating to children who are under the Guardianship of the Minister. Call 131 611. Monday to Friday 4:00pm – 9:00pm, 24 hours on weekends and public holidays.

Family Drug Support – Support for families affected by alcohol and other drugs. Call 1300 368 186. 24 hours a day/ 7 days per week.

Headspace – Free online and telephone service that supports young people aged between 12 and 25 and their families going through a tough time. Call 1800 650 890.

Head to Health – Head to Health brings together 500+ resources and services from Australia’s trusted mental health service providers. These resources include apps, online forums, and phone services.

Health Direct Australia – Telephone advice line staffed by nurses to provide expert health advice and information. Call 1800 022 222. 24 hours a day/7 days per week.

In Touch – Multicultural centre against family violence. Call 1800 755 988. Mon-Fri 9am-5pm. Please note: this is not a crisis service. If you require immediate help call 000.

Kids Helpline – Helpline for children. Call 1800 551 800. 24 hours a day/7 days per week.

Lifeline – Crisis support and suicide prevention helpline. Call 131 114. 24 hours a day/7 days per week.

MensLine Australia – A telephone and online support, information and referral service, helping men to deal with relationship problems in a practical and effective way. Call 1300 789 978.

MindSpot Clinic – An online and telephone clinic providing free assessment and treatment services for Australian adults with anxiety or depression. Call 1800 614 434.

My Aged Care – Support through the aged care system. Call 1800 200 422. Monday to Friday 8:00am – 8:00pm
Saturday 10:00am – 2:00pm.

Open Arms — Veterans and Families Counselling provides 24/7 free and confidential counselling to anyone who has served at least one day in the ADF, their partners and families. Call 1800 011 046.

PANDA (Perinatal Anxiety & Depression Australia) supports women, men and families across Australia affected by anxiety and depression during pregnancy and in the first year of parenthood. Call 1300 726 306, 9am – 7:30pm AEST (Mon-Fri).

Parentline Australia – Support, counselling and parent education. Call 1300 301 300. Monday to Friday 9:00am – 9:00pm.

Police Assistance – For Police assistance or to report a non-urgent crime. Call 131 444. 24 hours a day/7 days per week.

Pregnancy, Birth and Baby Helpline – Information and counselling service. Call 1800 882 436. 24 hours a day/7 days per week.

QLife  – Australia’s first nationally-oriented counselling and referral service for LGBTI people. The project provides nation-wide, early intervention, peer supported telephone and web based services to diverse people of all ages experiencing poor mental health, psychological distress, social isolation, discrimination, experiences of being misgendered and/or other social determinants that impact on their health and wellbeing. Call 1800 184 527. 3pm-12am.

Quitline – Support to quit smoking. Call 137 848. Monday to Friday 8:30am – 7:30pm, Saturday 2:00pm – 4:00pm.

Rainbow Sexual, Domestic and Family Violence Helpline – Available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, this service is available to anyone who identifies as part of the LGBTQIA+ community in Australia, and has recently or in the past experienced sexual domestic or family violence. Call 1800 497 212.

Relationships Australia – A provider of relationship support services for individuals, families and communities. Call 1300 364 277.

Safe Steps – Family Violence response centre. Call 1800 015 188 24 hours a day/7 days per week. Web chat available Mon-Fri 9am-midnight.

Salvation Army – Welfare organisation. Call 1300 363 622. 24 hours a day/7 days per week.

SANE Australia – Information about mental illness, treatments, where to go for support and help carers. Call 1800 187 263.

StandBy – Support after suicide. Call 1300 727 247. 24 hours a day/7 days per week.

State Emergency Service – Police, ambulance, fire. Call 000. 24 hours a day/7 days per week.

Suicide Call Back Service – 1300 659 467

Support after Suicide – Information, resources, counselling and group support to those bereaved by suicide. Education and professional development to health, welfare and education professionals. Call 1800 943 415.

Thirrili National Indigenous Postvention Service – After hours support for individuals, families and communities who have lost someone to suicide or experienced significant trauma. Call 1800 805 801, available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Every state and territory in Australia has local organisations and groups that can support you if you are experiencing violence or need emergency accommodation.

‍Australian Capital Territory

Domestic Violence Crisis Service (external link)

Canberra Rape Crisis Centre (CRCC) – counselling, crisis appointments and advocacy appointments are available on the phone. A 24-hour callout service to police and forensic services is open for those wishing to report sexual assault. Call 02 6247 2525. 7am to 11pm, 7 days a week

Legal Aid ACT – Legal Aid ACT helps people in the ACT with their legal problems, especially people who are socially or economically disadvantaged. We can help in criminal law, family law and some civil law matters. Call 1300 654 314 Monday to Thursday 8.30am – 7pm, Friday 8.30am – 5pm.

Women’s Legal Centre ACT – Assists women who cannot afford a private lawyer and do not qualify for legal aid. Women’s Legal Centre can also help if you are having problems working with care and protection, or problems at work related to family or domestic violence. The centre’s Aboriginal Women’s Program is available if you need a yarn or a hand to make sure you’ve got the support you need.

Karitane Careline – This is not a crisis service. Karitane Caroline offers parenting advice for children aged 0-5. Call 1300 227 464. Monday – Thursday 8am – 9pm, Friday 8am – 4.30pm, Saturday 9am – 3.30pm.

Legal Aid NSW – for those who need legal support. Call 1300 888 529 for legal advice, available Monday to Friday 9am – 5pm.

NSW Sexual Violence Helpline – provides telephone and online crisis counselling for anyone in Australia who has experienced or is at risk of sexual assault, family or domestic violence and their non offending supporters. Call 1800 424 017, available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Northern Territory

NT Legal Aid Commission – for those who need legal support. Call 1800 019 343 for free legal advice.

Parentline QLD & NT – counselling and support for parents and carers in Queensland and Northern Territory. Call 1300 30 1300. 8am – 10pm, 7 days a week.

Territory FACES – FACES is a telephone hotline that offers information about and referrals to support services throughout the whole of the NT. This service can be accessed by anyone in the community from parents and carers to professionals, who are seeking advice on resources and services that can help, support and empower families and children. Call 1800 999 900 between 8am-8pm Monday to Friday.

South Australia

Gambling Helpline – Support for people affected by gambling. Call 1800 858 858. 24 hours a day/7 days per week.

Hepatitis SA – Information and services for people affected by hepatitis. Call 1300 437 222. Monday to Friday 9:00am – 5:00pm.

Lived Experience Telephone Support Service (LETSS) – Assist people in the Adelaide Metro Region to access mental health support during the hours of via phone or web chat. Call 1800 013 755 or Web Chat. 5pm – 11:30pm, 365 days a year.

Legal Helpline – Free legal help. Call 1800 366 424. Monday to Friday 9:00am – 4:30pm

Mental health Triage – Can provide advice and information in a mental health emergency or crisis situation. Call 131 465. 24 hours a day/7 days a week.

SHINE SA – Sexual health information. Call 08 8300 5300. Monday to Friday 9:00am – 1:00pm.

Women’s Safety Services SA – a resource service for South Australians who are experiencing, or recently have experienced domestic and family violence. Call 1800 800 098, available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Tasmania

Family Violence Counselling and Support Service – FVCSS offers professional and specialised services to assist children, young people and adults affected by family violence. Call 1800 608 122, available Weekdays 9am – midnight, and weekends and public holidays 4pm – midnight.

Legal Aid Tasmania – for those who need legal support. Call 1300 366 611 for legal advice, available Monday to Friday 9am – 5pm.

Parentline Tasmania – The Parent Line offers 24-hour information and support for parents throughout Tasmania. Call 1300 808 178.

Victoria

Djirra – Aboriginal family violence prevention and legal service. Djirra will provide both telephone and face to face legal and non-legal support to Aboriginal people who are experiencing or have experienced family violence in Victoria. Call 1800 105 303

Legal Aid Victoria – for those who need legal support. Call 1300 792 387 for legal advice, available Monday to Friday 8am – 6pm.

Rainbow Door – Specialist helpline for LGBTIQA+ Victorians, their friends and family. Call 1800 729 367. Text 0408 017 246. 10am-5pm daily.

The Orange Door – A Victorian service, local support and safety hub for women, children, young people and families. Call 1800 319 353. Mon-Fri 9am-5pm.

Women’s Information and Referral Exchange (WIRE) – WIRE is the only free generalist service in Victoria inclusive of women, non-binary and gender diverse people from all backgrounds and experiences. We can help you with any issue you’re facing, including family violence, financial abuse, housing and more. Call 1300 134 130, available Monday – Friday, 9am – 5pm.

Western Australia

Grief and Loss Service – Support for people experiencing grief and loss. Call 08 8131 3400. Monday to Friday 9:00am – 5:00pm.

Women’s Domestic Violence Helpline – This free service provides support for women, with or without children, who are experiencing family and domestic violence. Call 1800 007 339, available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
